I got a thick letter from the IRS today. No good can possibly be contained within that envelope, and this was no exception. Apparently a couple of years ago Citibank decided to cancel over $3,000 worth of credit card debt that I incurred way back in 2000-2002, and the IRS sees this as additional income that I failed to report on my 2014 taxes; now they want close to $500 in back taxes, interest and penalties. WTF? I never heard about this, nor did I ever receive a 1099-C regarding this matter.
Any tax experts out there? I’m unemployed, broke and am going to have whatever refund I am owed for 2015 swallowed up by taxes on my current unemployment income (I cannot afford to live on what UI pays, and taking out taxes now would just be a kick in the balls). Just a couple of years ago I finally got done paying them for the last time I was unemployed and in a similar predicament, and now I’ve got a new problem on my hands. Oh, and they want their money in less than a month.
Each day just keeps getting better and better...

Pay them as fast as humanly possible. They are right on the unclaimed income. Sell your kidney if you have to. Penatlies and fees add up really fast.

Check out R/legal for some advice on Reddit. Then go from there. I know nothing about the IRS except to queue up and hold out my wallet.

You may have heard Alan Thicke on the radio.
Here is the IRS

Edit: just realized that Kinja doesn't have messinging. Let me know when you see this and we can figure out a way to chat. $500 is nothing to worry too much about.

File an extension, (normally allowed) to pay it off, maybe fight it because you were not given 1099. I know irs is super under stafted now, so this whole process may allow you some leeway to get the money together if need be

Demanding it within a month doesn’t sound right for something with a first notice. contact the IRS via their
website
to verify the validity of the notice before paying anything to anyone. Right now ‘tis the season to get scammed.

Is there any sort of statute of limitations on this kind of activity? I know after 7 years the debt doesn’t show on your credit report. Can Citi really hold on to this debt for all of those years and then just launch a surprise ‘gift’ on me like this?
I’m grateful for the cancellation of the debt, don’t get me wrong, but at this point I wish they would have held onto it, preferably until after I had died.

Email or text or something?
Normally I wouldn’t get too worked up about $500, but the landlord wants his money, the gas provider wants access to my basement to cut off my service, my electric bill is going up in time for winter, I haven’t found a job, etc.
On the bright side, with this new poverty diet (and broken molar) I’ve dropped 17 pounds from my peak, with more to follow - no need for Lipozene!
